It's very rare of me to make two trips to CVS in a week, but due to my goof-up on Sunday, I had to make a trip out to use a $5 ECB that expires tomorrow. Honestly, my goal today was just to use those $5 up before they expired, but I figured I might as well try to grow some ECBs out of it. And unfortunately, my transactions didn't go as planned. They never go as planned anymore...!
I had wanted to buy 3 AMBI soaps at $1.99 each to get back a total of $9 ECBs, but my CVS didn't carry the AMBI soaps! So I had to compromise and it wasn't too bad. Here is what I ended up doing:
Buy 1 Chex mix: $1.00
Buy 2 Excedrin ($1.99 each): $3.98
Buy 2 Soft & Dri ($2.99 each): $5.98
Buy 2 Hersey's Candy bars ($0.75 each): $1.50 - This was a last minute filler item to get the most out of my $5 ECB. They still had to adjust it down, but at least I got the most out of it.
Subtotal: $12.46
Use $2/$10 CVS coupon (-$2.00)
Use $1/1 Chex Mix coupon (-$1.00)
Use 2 $2/1 Excedrin coupon (-$4.00)
Use
2 $0.55/1 Soft & Dri peelies (-$1.10)
Grand Total: $4.36 (used $5 ECB adjusted down)
OOP expense: $0.11 tax
ECBs returned: $4.00 (Soft & Dri)
Okay, I didn't exactly grow my ECBs, but it's still better than just going in to blow $5. I do realize that I had $2.14 left until I hit my $5 ECB mark, and I really should have gotten some milk or something more useful than 2 candy bars, but since becoming a mother 4 months ago, one of the most valuable lessons that I've learned is that sometimes you just have to quit while you're ahead.
Before the little princess came along I would have parked myself in an aisle and calculated what I had in my cart. I would then see that I had $2.14 to play with and would proceed to spend the next 30 minutes roaming the store for the most useful item close to $2.14. Well, today (like most days) was a grab-and-go operation. Good thing I got out of there too, because after I went to CVS I drove a block to get our oil changed, and we had a full-on 30 minute screaming fit in the waiting room. At least I had nothing to do but try and calm her down...I shudder to think of her having a full-blown fit while I'm trying to pay at CVS.
