This week was not one of my best commissary weeks, but at least I managed to walk out of there without a headache. My commissary hands out copies of the P&G Saver on Saturdays starting at 1pm, so I will just drop by for the sake of the coupons, but never again will I shop on the weekend! It's so nice to be able to shop without being run over by carts. Seriously, on the weekends they should check your ID and then hand you a blunt stick to beat people out of your way with.
Even though I went during the same afternoon time-frame, my daughter slept the entire time in her car seat. The afternoon is normally her nap time, but she's a good baby in that she'll sleep wherever she is. She probably threw such a huge fit during the weekends because everyone kept bumping into our cart and waking her up.
Anyway, I managed to stay under my $50/week budget by $10, but I only netted a savings of $5.05, or 11%. I stockpiled some items ($10 worth), but a lot of the food I needed were non-coupon items (like meat). My husband won't be home for dinner for 3 nights next week so we'll have leftovers on those nights. Since it was a short menu week, I decided to go with some hearty meals like ribs or alfredo chicken. Here's the breakdown...
Box of 6 cans of diced tomatoes: $3.49 not needed this week, so this was for my stockpile
2 packs of boneless skinless chicken breasts ($3.37 each): $6.74
Spaghetti: $0.86
Value pack of 8 spices: $7.99 we only needed garlic powder, but I decided to buy this pack of 8 spices for $7.99 instead of spending $2 on just garlic powder since we could use the other spices as well
Pasta sauce: $0.75
3 cans of crushed tomatoes ($0.69 each): $2.07
4 cans of tomato paste ($0.33 each): $1.32 for my stockpile
Quakers hot oatmeal: $0.95 on sale, plus I had a coupon
Scrubbing Bubbles bathroom cleaner: $2.00 not needed, but I had a coupon for $2.75
2 bottles of Shredded Parmesan cheese ($3.09 each): $6.18
Half n Half: $0.94
Ground beef: $2.48
Ribs: $5.81
Garlic: $0.86
Subtotal: $43.29
Coupons Used
$0.50/3 Red Gold tomatoes (this was a peelie on the cans)
$0.50/1 Quaker oatmeal
$2.75 Scrubbing Bubbles printable ($0.75 overage!)
$0.30/1 Dean's Half n Half
2 $0.50/1 Perdue chicken (commissary-only coupon)
Total coupon savings: $5.05
Add on that pesky surcharge of $2.16 and my total comes out to $40.40. We've been able to stay under budget for over a month now, and while I've been a bit tempted to lower the budget from $50 to $40 a week to challenge myself, for the meantime I've decided against it. It's nice to be able to go to the commissary without doing an hour of planning beforehand, or be chewing on your fingernails watching your items ring up. It's nice to know that we're eating like royalty and still have $10 of wiggle-room in our budget.
